Many Secondary teachers across Hub regions are becoming interested in understanding the principles and pedagogies underpinning teaching for mastery. For this to develop from individual enthusiasm to long term sustainable, developments across a secondary mathematics department there is need to engage such teachers in practice-based professional development activity, consideration of leadership and management issues and (together with the senior leader and/or head of department) the development of departmental systems.

The Secondary Mastery Specialist Programme is a three-year programme.

Year One - attending core central training and developing own practice

Year Two - attending core central training, working towards PD Lead accreditation and developing own department

Year Three - working with two other departments to develop teaching for mastery

We have four Cohort 5 Secondary Mastery Specialists, who are entering their second year of the programme which focuses on their role as a Professional Development Lead, developing teaching for mastery within their department.

In addition, we have five Cohort 6 Secondary Mastery Specialists who will focus on developing their own understanding of teaching for mastery and their own classroom practice this year while attending three residential training events.

This video was produced in 2018/19. It describes the programme in more detail and lets you hear from teachers in some of the schools involved.

The Secondary Mastery Specialist Programme is led by Assistant Maths Hub Lead, Abby Cotton.
